Post Wildfire OHV Recovery Alliance

Day two (Sunday) of work weekend. Volunteer workers are needed for Mendocino National Forest RestoreTrails.Org projects on September 28-29 and October 5-6, 2024, Stonyford/St. John’s Mountain. Lunch is included on all work days sponsored by Metalcloak, and camping is available! All modalities needed! ABOUT ST. JOHN’S St John’s Mountain is a little-known motorized recreation spot with a cool 10-mile in-and-out 4x4, UTV, and OHV trail system that meanders from Davis Flat Campground, Stonyford, 10 miles to the top of St John’s Mountain with an elevation of 6749 feet. This area is known for its remarkable geology, minerals, chaparral, pine forests, fun trails, and a 360-degree view when at the top of the mountain. PROJECT WORK: The mega-fires of 2018 devasted the Mendocino National Forest Grindstone area, but St John’s Mountain weathered the fires pretty well. Still, most of the trail barriers/delineators were destroyed, leaving exposed rebar metal stakes and hazardous wood that all need to be removed and replaced with natural barriers (down or dead trees) to limit trail cutting and off-trail travel. RestoreTrails.Org has received grant funds to complete these tasks and has started the implementation phase. Next will be the clean-up of all the debris. It will take 15-20 volunteers and their motorcycles, UTVs, ATVs, Jeeps, and sturdy 4WD vehicles. VOLUNTEERS can show up to work just one day or the entire weekend, one or both weekends. RestoreTrails.org will supply tools, PPE, lunches on both days and post-event giveaways to the volunteers. GMRS radios are the selected communications preference and a big thank you to Rugged Radios for supplying PWORA/RestoreTrails.Org with handheld and base radios. RestoreTrails.Org staff met with Les Hill, Stonyford OHV Manager, and mobilized the RestoreTrails equipment to formulate the plan. We then recon’d the mountain to finalize details of the upcoming work events. PROJECT DATES AND CAMPING: The first work weekend will be September 28 - 29, 2024, with the entire weekend available for camping at the Davis Flat Campground, Stonyford (and OHV recreation if desired). The second work weekend is October 5 - 6, 2024, again, with the entire weekend available for camping and recreation at Davis Flat Campground. For those camping out, please plan on your own evening meals and entertainment/facilities (RV, tent, trailer). No reservations are needed; just show up and pick a spot. There are public toilets in the campground, but no water or hookups. CAMPGROUND DIRECTIONS: Located 9.5 miles west of Stonyford on Road 18N03.
